Sacramento County deputies are examining a violent incident that broke out Saturday night April 18 at Howe Park in Sacramento at the moment officers were breaking up an unlawful assembly of several hundred people.
Prior to the Shooting
Deputies were first dispatched to the park at approximately 6:30 PM after being notified of subjects reportedly carrying hidden weapons. Soon after, additional information came in describing a potential altercation occurring inside the park.
Air support searched from above but was unable to locate the reported altercation. Despite this, deputies found that a massive group had gathered without authorization without any permit or approval.
How the Shooting Unfolded
Deputies set about removing people from the park by surrounding the park and making announcements telling attendees to go home. Roughly 15 minutes were allowed for people to comply.
While deputies worked to disperse the gathering that 20 to 25 gunshots rang out. Gunfire sent hundreds fleeing. Law enforcement swiftly started looking for those injured.
Four Victims Hospitalized
By the time the scene was secured, four individuals were identified as having gunshot wounds. The four individuals — consisting of one woman and three men all reportedly in their early to late twenties — were taken to hospitals in the Sacramento area. Doctors and nurses noted that two victims were in serious condition, one had moderate injuries, and one suffered minor injuries. As of last report, no fatalities were reported and all four were stable.
Sacramento Metro Fire arrived on scene and helped care for those who had been shot prior to hospital transport.
Physical Evidence
The primary shooting scene was determined to have happened on the Cottage Way corridor alongside the Home Depot store located at the 2200 Howe Avenue block. Crime scene investigators identified additional spent rounds on Cottage Way. Bullet damage were noted in the wrought iron perimeter fencing surrounding the Home Depot store. The physical evidence showed that at least one shooter had been firing southward from the Cottage Way area toward the Home Depot. Forensic investigators and law enforcement detectives kept processing evidence well into the night.
Suspect Information
Information relayed through law enforcement radio communications showed that a Kia vehicle had been detained in Solano County. Four detainees were taken into custody. Sacramento law enforcement were sent to retrieve the detainees to transport the detainees for further questioning. Video that was reviewed confirmed that two individuals had fired weapons.
